A REGRESSION ANALYSIS ON THE HOURS SPENT ON THE INTERNET AND TIME SPENT TO STUDY ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS

ABSTRACT
The study investigated the effect of hours spent on the internet on academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The study had three research objectives, three research questions and three null hypotheses. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population was 989 and the sample was 492, which was obtained using random sampling technique. Questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. The researcher, with the help of nine trained research assistants, administered the instrument in Secondary schools in Ogun. The research questions were answered using, mean and standard deviation, while 2.5 was considered as the baseline for answering the research questions. Simple regression was employed to test the three null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed, among others, that social networking had significant effect on students ‘class attendance, their personal studies and participation in group work. It was concluded that overindulgence of students with social networking on purposeless endeavours had negative effect on their academic achievement. Based on the findings of the study, three recommendations were made, some of which were that senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State should devote less time to social networking as the study revealed it negatively affected their class attendance, senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State should devote less time to social networking, as the study revealed that it negatively affected their personal studies, students in secondary schools in Nigeria should devote less time to social networking as the study revealed that it negatively affected their participation in group project work.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Nigerians are confronted with an environment that is rapidly changing and the time spent on non-academic activities has negatively impacted academic performance. This survey investigates the contribution of time spent on the internet by students to academic achievement. The performance of students’ overtime has witnessed a constant depreciation. Many scholars see this as a direct consequence of governments neglect on education; some others say the students should share a large part of the blame. There is no doubt that spending time on the internet helps to improve ones intelligent quotient and ultimately make one conversant with happenings around him/her but doing this to the detriment of one’s studies has done more harm than good in our society. Ezeife 2008 opined that for students to be able to do academically well, they have spent little or no time on the internet. But doing this according to oluwatobi 2013 could as well be detrimental to students’ academic performance. it is no longer news that Nigerian students have so taken to the internet that do spend little or no time in their studies and these have to the decline of education in Nigeria. In sum, this study may help to develop a conceptual framework for guiding efforts to improve academic performance, as it relates to time used on the internet.

Social networking is the social relation among people who share interest, activities and background connections for users to interact over the internet. Living stone and Brake (2010). In their opinion said ‘social networking site like much else on the internet representing a moving target for researchers and policy makers’.

Presently around the world, the use of social networking has enabled networking around the world very simple, students in particular have made browsing social networking sites a daily practices and has reduced the way most student stay connected to their academic activities as many prefer to chat online while many think that social networking has no effects on their academic achievement. These made the researchers to study the habits of students and carefully look into the effect of hours spent on the internet and how they affect the academic achievement of senior secondary school student in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
In Nigeria, people tend to do what are trending activities especially the student, they are the first who adopt was things particularly in social networking sites.

Since the advent of social media sites in the 1990s. it is assumed in some quarters that the academic achievement of student is facing a lot of neglect and challenges. There is a deviations distraction and divided attention between social networking activities and their academic work.

The sites have led to the biggest problems in our academic environment in which average student spend 9 (nine) house a week on social networking sites (Willard 2009). Also, it is observed that student devote more attention to social media than they do their studies. Therefore, the question this study is out to answer is; what are the effect of hours spent on the internet and how do they affect the academic achievement of senior secondary students in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

1.3 Research Objectives
The main objective of the study is to investigate the effect of hours spent on the internet sites usage on academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The specific objectives were to:

1. determine the effect of hours spent on the internet on class attendance of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

2. investigate the effect of hours spent on the internet on personal studies of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

3. Determine the effect of time spent on social networking on academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

1.4 Research Questions
The study sought answers to the following research questions:

1. What effect does social networking have on class attendance of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State?

2. What is the effect of hours spent on the internet on personal studies of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State?

3. What is the effect of time spent on social networking on academic achievement of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State?

1.5 Null Hypotheses
1. Social networking has no significant effect on class attendance of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

2. Social networking has no significant effect on personal studies of senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

3. Time spent on social networking senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State has no significant effect on their academic achievement.

1.5 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The essence of this research work is to primarily study the hours spent on the internet and time spent to study on the academic achievement of senior secondary school student in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The research highlighted the concept, history and forms of social networking sites and their effects in academic achievement which intends to focus on senior secondary school students.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
For senior secondary school student, the study will reveal to them with more information on the positive and negative hours spent on the internet and time spent to study on their academic achievement.

In addition, senior secondary school teachers will find the study useful as the research will help them with more information on the effect of social media on the academic achievement of student.

Moreover, parent and guardians will find the study useful as the findings will reveal to them some factors effect on the academic achievement and their activities on the social networking sites and why they need to properly monitor their children.

Lastly, the study will provide relevance materials for the benefit of other researchers undertaking similar research.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Academic achievement: This is the outcome of education on how student deal with studies and how they have achieved different tasks given to them by their teachers.

Social Networking: The use of internet to make information about yourself available to other people especially among people who share interests.

Education: This is a social process in which individual achieves social competence and individual growth, carried on in selected controlled setting which can be instructionalize as a school or college.

Students: Someone engaged in studying something or someone who is very interested in a particular subject.

Effects: The aim, purpose produced by an action or state of being operative

1.8 Organization of the Study
The study comprises of five chapters. Chapter one consists of the background to the study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, objectives, research questions, significance, limitation of the study, delimitation of the study, basic assumptions, definitions of key terms and organization of the study. Chapter two comprises of literature review theoretical and conceptual frameworks. Chapter three deals with research methodology, covering research sampling, procedures, research instruments and their validity and reliability, procedures for data collection and data analysis. Chapter four comprises of findings and discussions which were generated by the study. Chapter five presents summary, conclusions and recommendations.
