ABSTRACT
The application of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology in every part of the world today has tremendously improved efficiency and effectiveness regarding security. The use of this technology in the healthcare system has taken the area to greater heights of confidence and reliability, especially for medical personnel, as well as the patients. This project focuses on helping dependent people live their lives more productively by helping them manage their lives better. With this application, there is an e-relationship between the health care provider and the patient. This technology redefines the traditional, doctor-pharmacist-patient ‘prescription’ relationship. Here the docto rs send an e-prescription to the pharmacist, the pharmacist then uses the NFC tags to tag those drugs with relative information linked to the prescribed drug. The patient on his part uses an NFC-enabled smartphone, which possesses the mobile application to read the information on the tagged drug, this beeps when it is time to take the drug. When this application is installed on a smartphone (NFC-enabled), the smartphone automatically launches the application once the drug box is brought close to the smartphone. The smartphone reads the prescribed drug and how the drug must be taken.

CHAPTER ONE
Introduction
1.1 Background
The level at which technology is fast growing in the current age has left an indelible mark in the development of many fields of study in the world today (Afolabi, 2007). With this, several areas in information and communication technology have been innovative to ensure remarkable growth in the persistent evolution of the society at large. In order words, the bond between technology and healthcare is illuminating by the day (AFRICATELECOMIT, 2014). Thus projecting an upbeat future for the wellbeing of people worldwide, especially the dependent (those with disability).
Some researchers are optimistic that the use of mobile application technology will bring revolutionary changes to the healthcare system, particularly with dependent people (AFRICATELECOMIT, 2014). For example, health researchers have recognized the impending effect of mobile technology, especially with that of NFC technology.
Based on this understanding, we have different implementations such as implementing different systems like, Ambient Intelligence (ISTAG, 2010) and Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) that aims to help the elderly at home, live and carry out their daily routine activities independently (IWAAL, 2009).
Moreover, NFC technology development and utilization has come a long way and many more innovations are ongoing in the NFC world. Many areas in business, smart homes, mobile payment and air ticketing that have embraced NFC technology have witnessed major advancements.
NFC technology is simple, inbuilt and a new short-range wireless connectivity technology that has evolved from a combination of prevailing connectionless identification systems, and interconnection technologies that allow one to use their mobile phone such as a smartphone for innovative purposes (Esko Strömmer et al, 2006).
An example of NFC-enabled smartphones is shown in Figure 1 below. The technology is fast, secure and convenient. Thus, it is automatic! There is no need to launch an application!
With the exploding growth of mobile technology, this project intends to use the NFC application for an ambient assisted medication (AAM).
This can be achieved by developing an application on a smartphone (NFC-enabled) which will aid the patient to, independently take the prescribed drug, in a prescribed order.
The procedure begins with the patient meeting with the doctor for consultation. After consultation, the prescription is sent electronically to both the patients’ NFC-enabled smartphone, as well as the hospital pharmacy database. The pharmacist in charge looks through the prescriptions makes provision for the drugs and ensures each drug box is NFC tagged having information about the drug. Such information includes the length of the treatment, number of dosages, and schedule of drug intake and at the same time, transmits a reference drug box to the patients’ NFC-enabled smartphone in which the above information on NFC tag will be clearly recorded.
1.2 Objectives
The core objective of this project is to use the NFC application to aid the dependent persons live their lives more independently. By using the NFC application, prescriptions are sent electronically from the doctor to the pharmacist, as well as the patient; for future referencing......
